Chronic cough
Chronic cough, also called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a cough that lasts for more than 8 weeks. It is a common problem, affecting about 10-15% of adults in the United States. Most cases are due to smoking, air pollution, or other lung diseases.
Symptoms of chronic cough include coughing up mucus, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. The cough can be so severe that it interferes with daily activities.
Treatment for chronic cough includes quitting smoking, using medications to loosen mucus and open the airways, and sometimes surgery. Some people may also need oxygen therapy.
