Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis, also commonly referred to as hay fever, is a condition that results when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the environment. These allergens can be anything from dust mites and pet dander to pollen and grasses. When an individual with allergic rhinitis comes into contact with one of these allergens, the immune system releases histamines. Histamines are chemicals that cause inflammation and irritation in the nose, throat, and lungs. This inflammation can lead to a number of symptoms, including congestion, sneezing, coughing, and wheezing. In some cases, allergic rhinitis can also lead to more serious conditions such as pneumonia or chest congestion.
